I worked at Ford for 30 years, splitting my time between safety electronics and electrified powertrains. I retired from Ford on my 30 year anniversary. At the time I was the Chief Engineer for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) Hardware, Systems and Features. I held some version of that position since 2009 as it grew from a local team of 10 radar and feature engineers to a global team more than 500 strong. I was responsible for all cameras, radars, ultrasonic sensors, electronic control units and ADAS domain controllers, both hardware and software. I led all sourcing decisions for these systems and was responsible for delivering the customer feature experience for BlueCruise hands-free driving, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane centering systems, high beam control, automatic parking, surround view camera systems and many others Level 1 through Level 3. I had global responsibility to support the entire Ford and Lincoln fleets in North America, South America, Europe, China and Australia: approximately four million vehicles per year.
While at Ford I developed and launched one generation of a centralized ADAS ECU, two generations of driver monitoring systems, three generations of radars and ultrasonic sensors, four generations of front windshield cameras and surround view cameras, and five generations of airbag electronics. My domain included sensors, features and ECUs from concept to completion. I led the sourcing activities from the Engineering side and drove many of the negotiating strategies myself.
